Rolled Up: The 2002 Wampersdorf (Austria) Train Collision

Background

The location of Wampersdorf in Europe.
The site of the accident seen from above in 2005, at the southern end of Wampersdorf station. The freight train was coming from the south (bottom of the image), the other train was parked facing south.

The trains involved

ÖBB 1142 541, a pre-refit series 1142 identical with the one pulling the freight train, photographed in April 2002.
A Bcmz-type sleeper car identical with the one involved in the accident, photographed in 2008.
ÖBB 1044 213, the locomotive pulling the RoLa-Service involved in the accident, photographed in 1992.

The accident

A DB-branded model of a Tadgs 959 freight car, the same type as the one that ran in the freight train with a faulty brake valve.
